Big Question - Year 10 - Supply Shifters

Consider what is driving supply in the following - CLICK ON THE LINKS - For each example say:

i) whether a shift/movement has taken place (Remember to indicate which market supply curve you are referring to.
ii) if there's been a movement along the S curve, a contraction or extension?
iii) if there's been a shift, an increase or decrease?Chinese cars           Houses            A price drop but not for the consumer           Armed Robbery          But why sell?    Burnt Apples        Parks    Wheat, bread and pizza!        Life’s a beach!     Rock lobster.          You say tomato I say…

    1) Chinese cars – The supply curve for electric and hydrogen vehicles will shift to the left (increase) and the curve for petrol cars will shift to the right. This is because of the Chinese government subsidising fuel efficient cars in an attempt to control the air pollution in cities. As a result, businesses will use more of their resources to produce these cars because they will see that there is more profit involved there.

    2) Houses – The supply curve for houses will undergo an increase shift, due to the encouragement and laws made by the Labour party to stimulate the house building industry.

    3) Coffee prices – The supply curve for coffee beans has increase – shifted after a good harvest. This means that prices are much lower. However, this is only for the companies that produce coffee and those who purchase beans from shops, and not for those who buy coffee from baristas. This is because the companies like Starbucks know that discounts at shops will not cause consumers to feel more satisfied, because of the ‘loss aversion’ effect. Moreover, customers are willing to pay more at shops, so discounts will not benefit the company. There are also other factors, such as hedging and government intervention.

    4) Onions armed robbery – There has been a large decrease shift in the supply curve for onions in India which has caused prices to rise. This is because of the heavy monsoon rains damaging onion crops. To get rid of the excess demand, the price has suddenly risen. However, as many people see onions as a staple food, some have taken to armed robbery on order to get them.

    5) But why sell? – In this case, there has been a decrease shift in the supply curve, which is causing prices to soar.

    6) Burnt apples – There has been a decrease shift in the supply curve for memory chips from China because of the fire at one of their main factories. This will in turn cause the supply curves of things like smartphones and laptops to shift to the left.

    7) Parks – This is an example of fixed supply. The curve of parking spots would be a vertical line, so the limited numbers of available parking spots are being sold at auctions to maximise the price.

    8) Wheat, bread and pizza – The supply curve for wheat in the UK has shifted to the left because of the weather as well as a “myriad of factors” such as restrictions on pesticides and other crop protecting chemicals.

    9) Life’s a beach – the supply curve of blue flags awarded to beaches has shifted to the left owing to higher judging standards.

    10) Rock lobster – As a result of the harsh winter in Scotland, the supply curve for lobster has undergone a decrease shift. They are only catching around 10% of last year’s amount and this will cause prices to spike.

    11) You say tomato, I say… - The supply curve for tomatoes in Brazil has shifted to the left because of a combination of bad weather, high production costs and less availability of farmland. This shift has affected a number of people and has even caused political problems.

Chinese Cars: The will be a shift in the supply curve for electric cars. This is an increase because the government is using subsidies to reduce air pollution in cities.

Houses: There will be an increased shift in the supply curve for houses, this is because the issue of the lack of housing has been given more importance.

A price drop but not for the consumer: There has been a shift in the supply curve for coffee beans, there has been good harvest so this is an increase.

Armed Robbery: There has been a decreased shift in the supply curve for onions, this is because of bad weather.

But why sell?: There has been a decreased shift in the supply curve for houses, this is because of growing demand and the supply can not keep up which is making the prices rise.

Burnt Apples: There has been a shift in the supply of Apple products because the memory chips which are required for these products have cannot be supplied on time as the factory in which they get produced caught fire, this shift is a decrease.

Parks: This is fixed supply because there are a limited amount of parking spaces so only that many spaces can be sold (no more than that amount).

Wheat, Bread, Pizza!: There would be a decreased shift in the supply curve of wheat because of poor weather and flooding.

Life's a beach!: There has been a shift in the supply curve. This shift would be a decrease because the number of beaches to which the Blue Flag award was given to has decreased from 79 to 55 due to tougher standards.

Rock Lobster: The supply curve for lobster/seafood in Scotland has shifted. This would be a decrease because they are 90% down on last years amount due to cold winters which have affected the sea temperature. Therefore, this has also caused prices to rise.

You say tomato I say...: There has been a shift in the supply curve for tomatoes in Brazil. This shift would be a decrease because of heavy rains, high fuel prices, very high demand and a reduction in the area used for plantation. This has also caused the price of tomatoes to rise.

  8. Chinese Cars: Shift, Increase, Subsidies.

Houses: Shift, Increase. This is because the government is building houses in masses.

Price drop: Shift, Increase. This is because of the increased healthy harvest.

Armed Robbery: Shift, Decrease. This is because of the poor weather. This means the onions will not grow in masses, and will decrease in level as well.

But why sell?: There will be a shift decrease in the supply curve.

Burnt Apples: There will be a shift, decrease. Many of the cards have been damaged and therefore they don't have values.

Parks - Shift, Decrease. This is because it is only a fixed supply and therefore there are limited spaces.

Wheat - Shift, Decrease. This is because the weather is poor and therefore the supply will decrease.

Life's a beach: There is a shift decrease because the quality of some beaches do not attract people.

Lobster: Shift Decrease. Again, because of the weather.

Tomato - There will be a shift decrease because there is not enough land to farm and plough the tomatoes because of the weather again.

  14. Chinese Cars- There is an outwards (increase) shift in supply for electric cars, due to the government giving subsidies to the firms that produce them. This could also give a signal to other produces to move into the hydrogen/electric car industry to make more of a profit
Houses- There is going to be an increase in supply for new houses, as the Labour party want to build more to accommodate for the rising population
A price drop… There has been an increase (shift) in supply for coffee due to a good harvest in both the USA and Brazil. This has caused prices of coffee to fall due to competitive markets.
Armed Robbery- There has been a decrease shift in the supply curve for onions in India because of a poor harvest, with a terrible monsoon season, and a drought the previous year. This has caused the price of onions to rise drastically, creating an expansion on the demand curve.
But why sell?-There is a decrease shift in supply due to an increasing population and diminishing numbers of houses. The price has therefore increased dramatically.
Burnt Apples- There is a clear decrease in supply due to a fire that has destroyed a main component that is used in the manufacturing of Iphones
Parks- This is an example of fixed supply as there are limited parking spaces. The supply curve would be a vertical line.
Wheat, Bread and Pizza! – The supply curve would see a shift to the left (decrease in supply) due to a poor harvest brought on by bad weather
Life’s a Beach – There is a decrease shift as these beaches are of bad quality, so people would not want to go to them
Rock Lobster – Prices of lobster have risen drastically because a long winter in Scotland has caused a decrease in the supply of lobsters

    8) Wheat, bread and pizza: Due to the weather and also restrictions on pesticides and other crop protecting chemicals, the supply curve will shift to the left.

    9) Life’s a beach: The supply curve of Blue Flags awarded to beaches will shift to the left.

But why sell- There has been movement along the supply curve for houses. The supply has decreased causing an extension due to the rise in demand and lack of supply.
Burnt Apples- There has been a shift in the supply curve for memory chips. There has been a decrease in supply due to a fire that broke out in one of the main factories in China.
Parks- This is fixed supply. There’s only a limited number of parking spaces so even if the price falls or rises the supply can’t change- this shown as a vertical line.
Wheat, bread and pizza!- There has been a shift in the supply curve for wheat. There has been a decrease in the supply because of poor weather conditions.

Chinese cars: There will be an increase shift in the supply curves for electric and hydrogen powered vehicles. This is due to the fact that the chinese government is providing manufactures with subsidies because they are trying to encourage the production of vehicles that create less air pollution.

Houses: Because of the UK's housing crisis, the Labour party is planning on building 200000 house by 2020. This will cause an increase shist on the supply curve for houses.

A price drop but not for the consumer: The large harvest of coffee beans will result in an increase shift in the supply curve of coffee beans. However this will not affect the consumer as coffe shops will not offer discounts or reduce prices as this will drive consumers away.

Armed Robbery (onions): The mansoons have caused a large decrease shift in the supply curve for onions in India. To reacht the equilibrium price again, the price has been raised to get rid of the excess demand. Because of this rise in price, many people can no longer afford to buy onions and some have decided to use armed robbery as a means of accuiring these goods.
